I Hate the 80s
I always feel blasphemous when say I disliked the 80s, even when I merely *think* about how much I disliked the 80s, because is seems most people my age feel such strong nostalgia for it. I would dare say the 80s were awkward for almost everyone (the fashion alone! [shudder]), but they were especially awkward for me. In case you haven't noticed, my hair does nothing but the one thing is does pretty well: sit there and be straight. Desperate attempts to make it "big" failed miserably and left me feeling inadequate. Clothes never fit right: big tops, small pants, hightops?? I looked like a strange little boy in the 80s. Oh, and the music. Man oh man do I hate 80s music.
Entering the 90s was an amazing time for me. I finally felt comfortable in my own skin. I very clearly remember hearing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time and feeling like something new and great was happening. I fully embraced grunge clothing; in retrospect, I realize it was not flattering, but at least it was comfortable!
This is a long intro for what is supposed to be some quick Friday fun...Anyway, I usually shun the 80s, but sometimes mocking it is a-ok in my book. On Nancy Pearl Wannabe's site, she posed a link to this. Then I found THIS, which I liked even more! Both HILARIOUS.
Happy Friday, whether you loved the 80s or you hated 'em. This seems like a good time for you to leave a comment saying whether or not you liked the 80s and why. Feel free to also talk about how listening to Nevermind for the first time blew your mind. Please and thanks.
Fran

#1 I hate the 80s, especially
I hate the 80s, especially the second part (85-89). I hated big hair, hair metal and fashions. The only post-1985 thing I liked and still like are some of the sitcoms like ALF for example. I much more prefer the 70's. In the 70's there were still many people with straight hair. And curly hair was just that - curly, but not as big as the 80's hair. Why do I care about fashions and women hair? Because I like women with straight hair and I don't like most curlies. I also hate the later part of the 2000s because it's a carbon copy of the 80s. The 2010's will be like the 70's and the 90's I guess and hope.

The ONE and only time I got sent to the principal's office, I happened to have my hair in a side pony-tail.
OH, and I totally got a perm to assist in my bang-heightening process.
I did, however, love my black, spandex leggings that my mom limited me to wearing only once a week, and my Guess! denim skirt.

The Year. Circa 1985.
The Band. Posion.
My Perm. Priceless.

That's a thumbs-down on the 80s for me, Fran...for the most part. I can appreciate some things, but the "popular" 80s music hurts my ears. However, my friends enjoy this crazy bar that has 80s nights and I go to make fun and enjoy the drink specials. Sometimes, if I enjoy the drink specials for too long, I find myself singing along...and then I dislike myself immensely the next day.

I'm not a big 80s fan either. I appreciate some things - like old school, corny ass music videos. But the music itself and the clothing, and the annoying sprayed into place hair and men wearing makeup - not so much.

I never tried to dress like I was in the 80's even when it was the 80's. I was just completely fashion ignorant but now looking back, maybe that was for the best. I too remember hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit for the first time and being blown away. But I can't say I dislike 80's music, some of it is quite good in my book.

I watched the Tears for Fears first and was almost in real tears myself. Since I saw it first, I liked it better than Ah-Ha.

Jenny - Those might be worth a view when you get home and away from Big Brother. ;-) I do love the 70s and love the music, even though I wasn't born until the 70s were more than half over. And I TOTALLY remember crimping our hair that night. Since you had such long, thick hair, I dare say it actually looked good. With my short hair I looked more like Pat Bena-tard.
Soup - Okay, I love Appetite too. That is one beautiful gem of the dirty, dank 80s.
NPW - I hear ya. You definitely had to post the library one. What was up with that video?? I somehow never saw that one back in the day - must have been before my 'rents got Mtv. That librarian's haircut is so...so...brain-bending.

Um...... I cant read either article because my job doesnt believe in letting us read anything fun. Fran, as you know, big 80's fan. Big disco fan too..... and so were you for awhile at least. Anyway, let me take you back to a particular time in the 80's. When you and I decided to crimp our hair. Remember that? Oh the disgrace......

Well it's hard to say, since I didn't move to this country until the early 90s.
But I do like Appetite for Destruction a lot, I guess that makes me an 80s fan :)

I think I liked the Take On Me video better too, but I had to give the Tears for Fears some love. I mean, come on- it was a LIBRARY video! That would never happen on the MTV of 2008. And that is a damn shame.
