I hate the 80s
The 80s and I were not friends. While most people have their awkward year(s), I had my awkward decade: the 80s. And honestly, I don't think it was just me; I think everyone in the 80s looked ridiculous. I knew it would happen. I remember discussing it with my friend Rebecca on numerous occasions. We had talked about our fear of the inevitable: 80s fashion coming back into style. Particularly, we were lamenting the thought of tapered jeans coming back. First, I started seeing straight-leg jeans coming back and I though, "Oh boy, here we go." Next thing I know, "skinny jeans" are in style. This is really just a euphemism for tapered jeans. And if you ask me, it's THE WORST THING TO HAPPEN TO FASHION SINCE, WELL, THE FIRST TIME TAPERED JEANS WERE IN STYLE.
The thing is I have a lot of friends that are well-dressed people and they're buying into it. That's what boggles my mind. Tapered jeans, skinny jeans - whatever you want to call them - are tremendously unflattering. They make you small on the bottom and big on top. I'm getting upset just talking about it.
Last week, I was at Old Navy digging through a pile of boot-cut jeans and I found the rinse I liked and even found my size. I was walking around the store for a good ten minutes before I looked down and noticed that they were - gasp - skinny jeans! I felt so dirty.
Okay, so I know a lot of you gals out there wear the skinny/tapered jeans. Fess up. What do you like about them so much? And everybody else, want to join me in bashing these atrocities of fashion?? Guys: are you a fan of the taper or a fan of the flare?
I just had an epiphany that it's probably the same for bell-bottom/flare jeans to my parents' generation. Weird, kinda.

Thank God for you, Fran. I don't care if they call them skinny jeans, they're tapered and they're ugly.

This guy is not a fan of the taper, I agree they aren't very flattering on women but we (speaking for all guys of course) are usually concentrating on the upper part of the jeans and not so concerned with the bottom of the legs!
Tapered legs should have stayed back in the 80's with the white "Miami Vice" sport coat.
Strangely enough I saw a guy at a bar last weekend wearing one with a teal shirt under it, rest assured people were helckling the heck out of him.

I had this pair of jeans in JR High which were already way too short, but of course, I had to peg-leg them, so by the time I was done, they were up to my knees. Ah, those were the days...

Re: George - I totally tight-rolled my jeans. Worst. Idea. Ever.
Re: Kevin - my brother may not appreciate my saying so, but he also never wore jeans in high school until he went to England for a few weeks. Before that, he always wore dress pants. When he finally started wearing jeans, though, he ironed them. So funny. Now he's let loose quite a bit and he even has some earrings and tattoos. Who knows, maybe you'll get some body ornamentation too.
Re: Courtney - amen, sista.
Re: Aunt Kish - so odd that the same thing has all of those different names - pegged, tapered, skinny. I don't get it.

Tapered jeans were in style when we were in high school, too. We called them "pegged" and we were not allowed to wear them to school. As I recall Aunt Nancy's friend Maggie got a pair and couldn't get them on because her feet were too big! We all had fun with that!

Tapered jeans are the devil's jeans.

I never even wore jeans in high school. I wore a pair of jeans in jr high and I thought they were uncomfortable so didn't buy another pair until I went to college. How's that for unfashionable? So all these old fahion trends that people are so embarrassed that they used to do - don't have that problem because I was oblivious to them. :-)
But... having said that, I think your argument would hold more weight if you weren't defending boot cut jeans. Sorry, I just can't get behind those.

Yikes!
What's next, the ol' fold-and-cuff? Anyone ever roll up the pant legs?
Dark, dark times.
